    Doctoral Program/Major in Bioscience

Hello, my name is Hermanus Nawaly from Indonesia. Currently, I am studying carbonic anhydrase in marine diatoms at prof. Matsuda’s laboratory. Diatom is a microalga whose photosynthesis is responsible for about 20% of annual global CO2 fixation. I am working to identify the function of several carbonic anhydrases which are supposed to be critical factors to maintain the diatom photosynthesis.

Previously, I followed the double degree masters course between Kwansei Gakuin University and Satya Wacana Christian University (Indonesia) in 2011-2013. So, I chose to advance to Doctoral program here at KGU. Kwansei Gakuin University is one of the best universities in Japan to study about basic and advanced science. Moreover, I like the school motto “Mastery for Service” very much. My previous university in Indonesia had a motto “Fear in God is the Beginning of Understanding”. Both of these mottos complement each other. When you reach an understanding, the next step is to help other people with our mastery. I think it is very important for people to know what they should do with their knowledge.

One of advantages of this Graduate School is since it offers a Graduate Program taught in English, you do not need to worry about Japanese proficiency. (Honestly, I have been here for three years but did not feel any inconvenience communicating in English.) Also, as faculty members have a tight connection with researchers at other institutes inside and outside of Japan, students have lots of opportunities to attend both domestic and international conferences as well as taking seminars by world-renowned researchers, which inspire our research work and help build up a research network. In the future, I wish to be a top-notch researcher who contributes to this world with the knowledge I have gained, following the mottos from both of universities.
