Bioscience

Introducing the Department of Bioscience

Life and environment are delicately in tune, maintaining the finest balance of energy, substances, signals, and information; homeostasis between life and environment. This balancing ability is primarily imprinted on DNA sequences of living organisms, genome, whose function is constantly stimulated and modified by the environment both inside and outside of the living organisms. As typified by the human genome project, we are now living in the era of steady progress in decoding the genome information of life, which leads us to deep understanding of life, ultimately being applied widely to Research & Development (R & D) in fields of medical science, agriculture, materials science, and energy science, and so on.

The Department of Bioscience aims to raise experts who can contribute to the R & D based upon genome information and its function. For this purpose, our curricula focus on principles and essential knowledge of bioscience, basic techniques for research on cells and biomolecules (genes and proteins), and advanced technologies for their utilization.

The curricula

  • Course work on bioscience at levels of molecule and function of genes.
A three-step course work, including basic, intermediate, and advanced subjects, is offered. These subjects are programmed to grasp principles of the living state of cells and organisms such as the function of molecule and gene information, and phenomena expressed by cells and organs. Examples of subjects: Bio-organic chemistry, Bioenergetics, Biotechnology, Molecular Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Mammal and Plant Physiology.
  • Laboratory projects to study molecular-based bioscience.
We offer extensive student-lab courses from the first-year to the third year. The first year course offers basic techniques to deal with analytical instruments and model organisms. The second year course is meant for obtaining advanced techniques to manipulate nucleic acid, protein, and cultured cell. The Third year course is separated into two courses, Bioscience & Bio-medchemistry, and offers the introduction of professional researches in each laboratory in the department.
  • A bachelor course in laboratory
The fourth-year students enter into a particular laboratory of their interest in the department and engage in professional research.
  • Bioscience Seminars
We offer monthly seminars by professional researchers invited from other research institutes in Japan and abroad.
  • Inter-institutional alliances
The Department and the graduate school of Bioscience are a part of inter-institutional alliance with The RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB) in Kobe, Hyogo College of Medicine in Nishinomiya, and Jilin University, Changchun, China to promote collaborative researches and to exchange graduate students and researchers in the fields of bioscience and biomedical science.
